About Yelnya
Yelnya is a town located on the mid-east side of the Smolensk Oblast in Yelninsky District near River Desna. The meaning of town's name can be derived from the Russian word yel- tree and Yelan-land from cleared forest. The town was mentioned in the ancient documents as the order given by the knyaz Rostislav of Smolensk to pay the taxes in the form of fox Skin and four grivnas in 1150. In 1776 town was granted its legal rights. There is a local museum in the town. Some major factories are there for economic growth like brick factory, cheese factory, a few sawmills and a huge bakery.
