Ulan-Ude is a city located on the center of Republic of Buryatia besides Baikal Lake in southeast and between the River Selenga and Uda. The census report of 2002 suggest that city was 3rd largest in terms of population in the Russian Far East. The city was called as Udinsk and Verkhneudinsk until 1783 and 27 July 1934 respectively. The city was founded in 1668 as a small fortress and was called as Udinskoye. The city was given city rights in 1775. The total population of the town until 2018 is 4,34,869 including Russians, Buryats, Ukrainians, Tatars and others. The city is home of Tibetan Buddhism in Russia.
