Vorkuta is called as Coal-mining town and is located on northeast side of the Komi Republic near the Arctic Circle in north besides River Usa in Pechora coal Basin. The town was founded as industrial coal fields near River Vorkuta on 4th January 1936 by famous geologist Georgy Chernov. The town was given township rights on 26th November 1943. The town is governed by Igor Gurlev. The economy of the town before 21st century was based upon the coal mines, but it got changed due to high operation cost from mine operators.
