Tyrnyauz is a town located on the west side of the Kabardino-Balkaria in Elbrussky District in Russia. The main road of the town leads to the route for Climbing Mount Elbrus and Upper Baksan Valley. The town was founded in 1934 besides the processing plant and tungsten mine that no longer active but still stands there. The township status was given in 1955. Total population of the town is around 20,566 until 2018 including Russians, Balkars, Kabardins, Ukrainians and Ossetians. One of the former president Valery Kokov of the Kabardino-Balkar Republic was born in this town.
